Also new and a welcome addition is the reduced amount of QTEs, which is complemented with joystiq moves to avoid attacks and things like that. You can grab them and use them as a shield, a weapon, or rip them in half. The halo that appears above enemies' heads upon taking a beating is a nice touch. I'd say that somehow combat feels more organic here, though I also have a feeling the level of challenge has been upped. You can also employ melee attacks such as kicks and punches during combat, as well as evade and attack from the air like in previous games.

You should try to find as many orb chests as you can and kill your enemies using a variety of combos, because those precious red orbs will serve to upgrade your weapons and open up additional combo moves. The gameplay is still fun. In God of War: Ascension, the more you fight and the better you do it, the stronger Kratos will get. The lack of camera controls in God of War: Ascension is also missed.

If they wanted to change something for God of War: Ascension, this could have been it, but instead we're stuck with an often tiny Kratos fending for himself in the middle of a pool of enemies sometimes it's utter chaos, as it's hard to see where you are and what you are doing. I want to see Kratos rip enemies apart, pierce them with the blades, and crush them, but that's only shown clearly about 10% of the time, which is not quite enough for what's supposed to be one of the goriest games there is.

It basically uses the God of War III engine, so it's still as sharp and detailed as the previous PS3 game, but certain aspects are bothersome, like the overall darkness of the visuals and the small dose of close-ups during combat. The thing is, this series is starting to show its age. Unfortunately, God of War: Ascension doesn't quite "ascend" to higher grounds, but at least it manages to offer players a savory dose of God of War as we know it, albeit with some changes you may or may not appreciate. I've played every single God of War game so far, including the HD remakes for PS3, and here we have it, another installment for the popular PlayStation action series.
